Why Life Gets More Complicated, Not Simpler

I used to think that one day life would become easier. Once the business was stable and the kids were older. Once the finances were in a better place and I'd gained enough experience. Surely there would come a point where the difficult decisions became less frequent and life started making more sense.
I'm not so sure anymore.
What I've discovered is that life doesn't necessarily become simpler as we grow. It becomes more complex. When you're young, most decisions affect you. As you grow, your decisions begin affecting your family, your team, your business, your friends and sometimes an entire community. You carry more responsibility because more people are depending on you. That is both a privilege and a weight.
One conversation can have several right answers, and one decision can create both gain and loss. Helping one person sometimes means disappointing another. You can make the right decision and still wish things had turned out differently.
That's life.
For a while, I found that frustrating. Like many others, I wanted clarity, certainty and I wanted every important decision to come with the confidence that I was getting it exactly right. The older I've become, the more I've realized that certainty is a poor foundation for leadership because it rarely stays around for very long.
Wisdom is different. Wisdom allows you to keep moving even when some questions remain unanswered. It doesn't ignore uncertainty but simply refuses to let uncertainty become the thing that keeps you standing still. I've noticed that the people I admire most don't have all the answers but they do stay remarkably steady when nobody has all the answers. They listen, ask questions, change course when necessary, admit when they don't know and trust God with the parts they can't control.
Perhaps that's one of the biggest changes that happens as we mature. Early on, we spend a lot of energy trying to simplify life. Later, we realize that many things can't be simplified.
Marriage isn't simple.
Parenting isn't simple.
Leading people isn't simple.
Faith isn't simple.
None of those become easier because we finally discover the secret, they become more manageable because we slowly become the kind of people who can carry them. Maybe that's what growth really is... Not reducing the complexity around us but growing our capacity to live faithfully within it.
Reflection
Is there a part of your life where you've been waiting for complete clarity before moving forward? What if the next step doesn't require every answer? What if it simply requires enough trust to take the next faithful step?
