Accountability Is a Gift, Not a Threat.

Most people hear the word accountability and immediately think of being corrected, being watched or being judged. It's no wonder we often resist it.

But I've started wondering if we've misunderstood accountability. The people who have shaped my life most weren't the ones who simply encouraged me. They were the people who loved me enough to ask difficult questions. Not because they wanted control but because they wanted me to become better.

Left to ourselves, we all have blind spots. We justify decisions, we overlook warning signs and we convince ourselves everything is fine. That's simply part of being human. Accountability gives someone permission to see what we can't.

I've had conversations I didn't particularly enjoy at the time. Someone challenged my thinking, questioned my motives and pointed out something I'd completely missed. None of it felt comfortable. Looking back, many of those conversations protected me from becoming someone I never wanted to be.

I've also learned that accountability works both ways. It's not just about allowing people to speak into your life but about becoming the kind of person who can speak truth with kindness into someone else's. Not to win and not to criticize, simply because we care.

The older I get, the less impressed I am by people who never need correction. I'm far more impressed by those who receive it with humility. Because humility keeps us growing. Pride usually stops us long before our potential does.

Reflection:

Who has permission to tell you something you might not want to hear?
